Exploring the hidden wisdom of the scriptures

Between Death and Life He said: “It is Finished”

The death and resurrection of Jesus Christ is the most important event for Christians. It’s the event when our Lord and Savior was able to fulfill His mission. It’s the event where He saved our souls. And it’s the event in which His glory was restored. What happened in those three days that were prophesied by many?

Day One: Good Friday

(Matthew 27:45–61, John 19:28–42)

At around 3:00 PM, after hours of humiliation, torment and suffering, Jesus spoke His final words on the cross:
“It is finished” (John 19:30).

In that moment the penalty of sin was paid in full. Heaven mourned, and the earth responded. The sky turned dark (Matthew 27:45), the Temple veil tore in two from top to bottom (Matthew 27:51), and the ground shook violently.

Roman soldiers who had mocked Him moments before were now in awe, for they realized that He was indeed not just an ordinary man:
“Truly this was the Son of God!” (Matthew 27:54)

His body was taken down by Joseph of Arimathea, a secret follower of Jesus, and laid in a new tomb (John 19:38–42). The women who had followed Him from Galilee (Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and other unnamed women) watched where He was laid. There was no time to anoint His body properly because the Sabbath was near.

Day Two: Holy Saturday

(Matthew 27:62–66, Luke 23:56)

The Sabbath came, and for the disciples, it was a day of confusion and grief. Their Teacher, friend, and hope, was gone. They had heard Him say He would rise again (Mark 9:31), but in those moments of sorrow, they forgot about His words.

Behind locked doors, they mourned Him, each in their own way. The women rested, honoring the Sabbath, but planned to return at dawn to finish anointing the body (Luke 23:56).

Meanwhile the religious leaders who were so adamant about killing Him were the ones who remembered Jesus’ resurrection claim. So they asked Pilate for guards to be placed at the tomb. The tomb was sealed, and Roman soldiers stood watch. (Matthew 27:62–66)

Day Three: Easter Sunday

(Matthew 28:1–10, Luke 24:1–12, John 20:1–18)

At dawn on the third day the women returned with spices. They wanted to embalm His body and lay Him to rest properly, only to find the stone rolled away. AND the tomb was empty.

An angel greeted them:
“He is not here, for He has risen, as He said.” (Matthew 28:6)

Fear and wonder gripped their hearts. Then, Jesus Himself appeared to Mary Magdalene in the garden (John 20:11–18), calling her by name. Later, He appeared to the disciples, walking through locked doors and breathing peace over them, and proving to them that He is indeed ‘I AM‘ (John 20:19–22).

The resurrection was not just a moment, it was the beginning of a new reality. Sin had been defeated and death had been swallowed in victory. Everything Jesus promised had come true, and because of this you and I have a place in heaven.
