Christ-centered resolutions for a victorious year

Every year, we craft New Year’s resolutions, vowing to become better versions of ourselves. We commit to adopting a healthier lifestyle, saving money, praying more, and dedicating more time to our friends.

It’s intriguing why we often wait for the start of a new year to initiate lifestyle changes. As we approach the end of 2023, many of us are likely contemplating plans for self-improvement in the coming year. Yet, the question arises: where do these ideas and inspirations originate?

Are our resolutions a product of a momentary emotional high, making us to jot down ambitious goals? Or, are we deliberate in our note-taking, recognizing the long-term benefits of our aspirations? Reflecting on these questions can provide insight into the genuineness and sustainability of our New Year’s resolutions.

Regardless of the motivation behind our New Year’s resolutions, a common practice for every Christian should be to bring our desires before God. As Matthew 19:26 reminds us, “With man, this is impossible, but with God, all things are possible.” Seeking divine guidance and strength can be the anchor that transforms our resolutions from mere intentions to achievable realities.

How should we go about our resolutions? Psychologists will tell you that when you’re trying to achieve a goal, you should make a planning while thinking of the acronym SMART. This means that your plans should be:

  1. Specific: Avoid setting vague goals; instead, be specific about what you want to achieve. Clearly outline what needs to be done, who is responsible, and the steps required for success.
For example, if your goal is to be a better Christian next year, dive into the specifics of what that entails. Instead of a general statement like ‘I want to be a better Christian,’ break it down into tangible aspirations. Specify desires like improving your prayer life, learning more worship songs, receiving the fruits of the Spirit, or increasing your knowledge of Bible verses. This clarity not only gives you a clear roadmap but also increases the likelihood of success in your endeavors.
Even in our prayers we have to be specific when asking from God (Matthew 20:30-34).
  2. Measurable: Make your goals measurable so you can easily track your progress. Ask yourself, what does success look like for this goal?
For example, if you aim to get married in 2024, success means having a husband or wife by this time next year. If it’s about graduating, success is holding your certificate or diploma by the end of next year.
Having a clear criteria helps you know if you’ve achieved your goal or not. This simplicity makes it easier to stay motivated and evaluate your progress effectively.
  3. Achievable: Many encounter challenges when setting goals they can’t realistically achieve, leading to self-pity or a string of excuses for their lack of success.
For instance, deciding to run a 10km marathon by February after not exercising for a decade may set you up for disappointment. Certainly miracles are possible and as Christians, we shouldn’t let our goals be driven solely by worldly pressures. BUT did you pray and seek God’s guidance when setting your goal?
Setting a goal without consulting God can be akin to telling Him you can handle it yourself. If things don’t work out, you don’t have the right to question God. Including prayer in your aspirations ensures alignment with His plan for your life, making even a 10km marathon feasible IF it’s meant for you (Proverbs 19:21 Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails).
  4. Relevant: Why are you setting this goal? Are you influenced by what everyone else is doing? Is it an attempt to prove something to someone else? Or do you genuinely believe this goal will contribute positively to your life? If the goal lacks personal or spiritual relevance, my advice is to consider removing it from your list. This way, you can direct your energy towards more meaningful objectives.
  5. Time-bound: When do you plan to start working towards your goal? How long do you think it will take, and when do you aim to finish?
Let’s say you’re launching a new product next year. When do you want the design to be ready? How much time do you need for approval? What season is best for the launch?
Without a timetable, things might get chaotic, and you could miss the right timing. A clear schedule not only organizes your plans but ensures you act at the best possible times (Ecclesiastes 3:1 There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens).

As mentioned earlier, setting many goals doesn’t guarantee their success. Before listing our desires, especially as Christians, it’s essential to seek guidance from our heavenly Father. Ask Him about His plans for you in the coming year, and pray for His revelation (Romans 8:14 For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God).

It’s crucial that our plans align with the scriptures, as God won’t answer prayers that lead to our downfall. For instance, praying to get married while dating the wrong person may not align with His will. Similarly, if your desire for a new job doesn’t work out, seek to understand why (Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future).

God is not a genie at our beck and call but our Father who desires the best for us, even when we are uncertain about what that is. Prayer involves not just making requests but also listening to His counsel and acting accordingly. By aligning our wishes with God’s plans, we can triumph in the coming year.
