Exploring the hidden wisdom of the scriptures

Prayerfully Syncing My Life Plans with God’s Calendar

In Ecclesiastes 3:1, it is stated, “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.” As we joyfully celebrate the new year and set resolutions, I believe it is wise to pause and take a global perspective on the year.

Considering that there is a designated time and season for every aspect of life, I’d love to align my actions with the will of God. To fully understand what this means, I decided to analyze each month of the year, hoping to understand the expectations and challenges that accompany each season. In the midst of this reflection, it feels like I’m aligning my plans with the divine perspective and purpose designed for my life.

The Bible presents a different sequence of months with Hebrew names that differ from our contemporary calendar. However, my intention isn’t to explore the historical origins of these months or go into theology but rather to deepen my understanding of how God’s timing operated then and how I can apply it to my life now.

January

According to the Hebrew calendar, January is the 10th month, and this totally surprised me. I mean, January is like the poster child for new beginnings, right? It’s the month everyone’s pumped to start over. So, finding out it’s the 10th month just adds an insane twist to the whole beginning-of-the-year vibe.

Jeremiah 39:1
In the ninth year of Zedekiah king of Judah, in the tenth month, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon marched against Jerusalem with his whole army and laid siege to it.

This chapter talks about the fall of Jerusalem. The Babylonians had taken control, and as is typical in any war scenario, people were held captive and some lost their lives. However, as we progress through the chapter (verse 15-18), we witness how, despite the tragedy, God remained with them. He was resolute in ensuring they wouldn’t meet their demise at the hands of their enemies.

15 While Jeremiah had been confined in the courtyard of the guard, the word of the Lord came to him:
16 “Go and tell Ebed-Melek the Cushite, ‘This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: I am about to fulfill my words against this city—words concerning disaster, not prosperity. At that time they will be fulfilled before your eyes.
17 But I will rescue you on that day, declares the Lord; you will not be given into the hands of those you fear.
18 I will save you; you will not fall by the sword but will escape with your life, because you trust in me, declares the Lord.’

Another place where I see a similar situation is

Genesis 8:1-5
But God remembered Noah and all the wild animals and the livestock that were with him in the ark, and he sent a wind over the earth, and the waters receded.
Now the springs of the deep and the floodgates of the heavens had been closed, and the rain had stopped falling from the sky.
The water receded steadily from the earth. At the end of the hundred and fifty days the water had gone down,
and on the seventeenth day of the seventh month the ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat.
The waters continued to recede until the tenth month, and on the first day of the tenth month the tops of the mountains became visible.

After the flood that swept away all life from the surface except those who were on Noah’s ark, there came an end to the flood in the 10th month, and they could see the top of the mountain.

What does this mean to me?
The month of January is like a beacon of hope. We might be struggling with various issues, much like how Jerusalem was held captive, or we might not see the end of the storm, akin to Noah’s ark during the flood. But God is always with us, and as long as He is there, there is hope.

January marks the conclusion of troubles and offers a sneak peek into the new beginnings that are on the horizon. So, even though it might be the 10th month according to the Bible, there is still a fresh start that comes with the month of January.

February

If January is the 10th then naturally February would be the 11th month.

Deuteronomy 1:3
In the fortieth year, on the first day of the eleventh month, Moses proclaimed to the Israelites all that the Lord had commanded him concerning them.

God gave Moses clear instructions to relay unto the Israelites on how He wants them to serve and honor Him.

Ezekiel 26:1
In the eleventh month of the twelfth year, on the first day of the month, the word of the Lord came to me

In this chapter, we witness God’s anger directed at Tyre due to its wicked and opportunistic attitude toward the fall of Jerusalem. God foretold the destruction of the nation of Tyre because it dared to rejoice at the trials of Jerusalem.

Ezekiel 30:20
In the eleventh year, in the first month on the seventh day, the word of the Lord came to me

In this passage, God reveals His plans for the Egyptians and their allies. He declares that they will face punishment for their wrongdoings.

What these verses share is the experience of hearing from the Lord. God is always communicating with us, revealing His plans for our lives. The month of February becomes a season of prophecies and perception. It is a time when my ears should be open to hear His voice, and my heart should be ready for the Holy Spirit to interpret God’s messages, enabling me to understand His plan for my life and prepare for whatever lies ahead.

March

The 12th and last month of the Hebrew Calendar is March.

Esther 9:1
On the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, the month of Adar, the edict commanded by the king was to be carried out. On this day the enemies of the Jews had hoped to overpower them, but now the tables were turned and the Jews got the upper hand over those who hated them.

Haman the Agagite, the enemy of all the Jews, had plotted against the Jews to destroy them, and had cast Pur (= casting lots), to crush and to destroy them. But when it came before the king, his evil plan against the Jews returned to his own head, and he and his sons were hung on the gallows.

Ezra 6:15-16
15 The temple was completed on the third day of the month Adar, in the sixth year of the reign of King Darius.
16 Then the people of Israel—the priests, the Levites and the rest of the exiles—celebrated the dedication of the house of God with joy.

The building of the temple wasn’t without obstacles (Ezra chapter 4-5) but at the end of the day the Israelites were able to finish building the Temple for God and they rejoiced and celebrated.

2 Kings 25:27
Now it came about in the thirty-seventh year of the exile of Jehoiachin king of Judah, in the twelfth month, on the twenty-seventh day of the month, that Evil-merodach king of Babylon, in the year that he became king, released Jehoiachin king of Judah from prison

Jehoiachin was in prison for 37 years (imprisoned by Nebuchadnezzar) but not only was he set free, the new King treated him like royalty (he was given a place at the royal table).

I perceive March as a month of victory and triumph. The schemes of the enemy will be entirely disrupted, and our glory completely restored.

April

Apparently this is the first month of the year (Exodus 12:2)

Exodus 13:4
On this day in the month of Abib, you are about to go forth.

When I first read this, I thought it was about going on missions or spreading the word, but it didn’t feel right so I had to go back and properly read this verse in context.

Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,
“Consecrate to Me all the firstborn, whatever opens the womb among the children of Israel, both of man and beast; it is Mine.”
And Moses said to the people: “Remember this day in which you went out of Egypt, out of the house of bondage; for by strength of hand the Lord brought you out of this place. No leavened bread shall be eaten.
On this day you are going out, in the month Abib.

As the firstborn, I belong to God—my life is literally His. I am dedicated unto Him, and so my life should reflect His gospel.

Similarly, the Israelites were commanded to remember how the Lord had delivered them from the Egyptians and were urged to commit themselves to the things of the Lord.

Considering that we’re all considered firstborns of God (Hebrews 12:23), we’re to set ourselves apart and be holy so that God can use us, for God is holy.

May

The month of May is the second month according to the Hebrew calendar.

1 Kings 6
And it came to pass in the four hundred and eightieth year after the children of Israel were come out of the land of Egypt, in the fourth year of Solomon’s reign over Israel, in the month Zif, which is the second month, that he began to build the house of the LORD.

In this chapter, we get a detailed look at the magnificent temple Solomon built. It got me thinking: What am I doing that would make God proud of me?
As we keep reading, we see God’s willingness to bless Solomon even more, but there’s a condition: staying faithful to His commands.

11 Then the Lord gave this message to Solomon:
12 “Concerning this Temple you are building, if you keep all my decrees and regulations and obey all my commands, I will fulfill through you the promise I made to your father, David.
13 I will live among the Israelites and will never abandon my people Israel.

It means I need to find ways to make God happy. He has given us everything we need—wisdom, talents, opportunities. Now, all that’s left is recognizing them and putting them to good use.

June

The next month on the list is the month of June which is the 3rd month. Just like the month of May made it clear that we should be doing things for God, June is a month of giving offerings.

2 Chronicles 31:6-8
The people who had moved to Judah from Israel, and the people of Judah themselves, brought in the tithes of their cattle, sheep, and goats and a tithe of the things that had been dedicated to the Lord their God, and they piled them up in great heaps.
They began piling them up in late spring, and the heaps continued to grow until early autumn.
When Hezekiah and his officials came and saw these huge piles, they thanked the Lord and his people Israel!

What did I offer unto God last year? And what do I plan to offer to Him this year?
Am I only thanking Him with the words of my mouth or am I showing gratitude with my actions?

July

I’m assuming this is the fourth month since we’re following the chronological order.

Ezekiel 1:1
Now it came about in the thirtieth year, on the fifth day of the fourth month, while I was by the river Chebar among the exiles, the heavens were opened and I saw visions of God.

I’ve often emphasized hearing from God, but imagine how wonderful it would be to SEE visions. It’s like a movie directed by God unfolding before your eyes. The month of July is for witnessing the plans of God for our lives, a time of divine prophecies that draw us closer to our Father in heaven.

August

Ezra 7:6-9
this Ezra came up from Babylon; and he was a skilled scribe in the Law of Moses, which the Lord God of Israel had given. The king granted him all his request, according to the hand of the Lord his God upon him.
Some of the children of Israel, the priests, the Levites, the singers, the gatekeepers, and the Nethinim came up to Jerusalem in the seventh year of King Artaxerxes.
And Ezra came to Jerusalem in the fifth month, which was in the seventh year of the king.
On the first day of the first month he began his journey from Babylon, and on the first day of the fifth month he came to Jerusalem, according to the good hand of his God upon him.

Ezra, a scribe and teacher, was distinguished for his skill and recognized by the King. The hand of the Lord was upon him, setting him apart from other scribes. Individually, we might not be extraordinary, but with God by our side, no one can deny us or steal our glory.

This makes me reflect on my own gifts, talents, and ministry—have they been blessed by God, or am I pursuing them for my own glory and recognition?

September

The month September is another month of prophecies and revelations.

Luke 1:26
Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city in Galilee called Nazareth

We all know what good news angel Gabriel went to deliver to Mary and Joseph.

Haggai 1:1
In the second year of King Darius, on the first day of the sixth month, the word of the Lord came through the prophet Haggai to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua son of Jozadak, the high priest

Here the Lord told the High priest that they needed to have patient for the time to build the temple had not yet come.

Ezekiel 8:1
In the sixth year, in the sixth month on the fifth day, while I was sitting in my house and the elders of Judah were sitting before me, the hand of the Sovereign Lord came on me there.

Even here Ezekiel is shown in visions the abominations happening at the temple and the Lord made it clear that He would deal with them.

Hearing and seeing from God shouldn’t be something exclusive to certain months but in some seasons we should be cautious and pay extra attention.

October

Leviticus 25:9
Then shalt thou cause the trumpet of the jubilee to sound on the tenth day of the seventh month, in the day of atonement shall ye make the trumpet sound throughout all your land.

Leviticus 23:41
You shall thus celebrate it as a feast to the Lord for seven days in the year. It shall be a perpetual statute throughout your generations; you shall celebrate it in the seventh month.

2 Chronicles 7:10
Then on the twenty-third day of the seventh month he sent the people to their tents, rejoicing and happy of heart because of the goodness that the Lord had shown to David and to Solomon and to His people Israel.

These scriptures are all about celebration, and it’s particularly meaningful for me as October marks my birth month. This month is destined to be filled with numerous reasons to rejoice.

November

1 Kings 6:38
And in the eleventh year, in the month Bul, which is the eighth month, was the house finished throughout all the parts thereof, and according to all the fashion of it. So was he seven years in building it.

This month symbolizes completion; it’s the time when we’ll reap the fruits of all our labor.

December

Zechariah 7:1-3
In the fourth year of King Darius, the word of the Lord came to Zechariah on the fourth day of the ninth month, the month of Kislev. The people of Bethel had sent Sharezer and Regem-Melek, together with their men, to entreat the Lord by asking the priests of the house of the Lord Almighty and the prophets, “Should I mourn and fast in the fifth month, as I have done for so many years?”

This chapter shows the behavior of Christians, highlighting the tendency to engage in fasting and prayers and then revert to personal desires or misconceptions about God’s will.
We, as Christians, collectively need to strive for better service to God (myself included), recognizing that our understanding of righteousness may differ from His.
Fortunately, we have direct communication with God through prayers and scripture, and the key lies in correctly interpreting His word

Even though the order may differ, each month still carries its own unique message. Some months might share the same message for all believers, while others may have specific messages tailored for particular individuals—after all, we’re each experiencing different times and seasons in life. I studied these months and applied them to my life so it’s an exercise each of us can do because I’m sure our interpretations of the scriptures will be different.

God utilizes EVERYTHING to communicate with us, and it’s up to us to recognize the signs and interpret them correctly.

May we have the discernment to see God’s plans for our lives this year and maintain unwavering faith, trusting that He has our best interests at heart, regardless of the challenges we may face along the way.
