It’s been almost a month since my last post, which is quite ridiculous! Life really shouldn’t have been so busy that I couldn’t set time aside to reflect.
Since this is the last post of the year, we might as well make it count. It’s the season of celebration; a time when we remember friends and family members we haven’t seen or heard from in a long time. A season where we spend a lot of money and make companies richer than they already are. A season of lots and lots of cooking, eating, drinking, laughing, love, warmth, and joy.
But what are we, as Christians, actually celebrating? Do we think about the true purpose, or are we caught up in the festivities? Have we replaced the cross with a tree, or are we truly celebrating the birth of our Lord and Savior?
Christians normally understand Christmas as a celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ, the incarnation of God; God becoming human. The celebration keeps a strong focus on Jesus’ saving mission rather than on tradition or ritual.
I’ll give you 5 reasons why Christians celebrate Christmas.
1. Jesus as Savior, not just a baby
Christmas is not just about Jesus’ birth, but about why He was born:
- Jesus came to save humanity from sin (Matthew 1:21).
- It’s also known as the beginning of God’s redemptive plan.
2. The Incarnation as a work of the Holy Spirit
- Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit (Luke 1:35).
- Christmas highlights God’s supernatural power and divine intervention.
3. Evangelistic opportunity
Christmas is seen as a powerful time to:
- Share the gospel with unbelievers.
- Emphasize repentance, salvation, and new life in Christ.
- Invite people to church who might not attend otherwise.
4. Joyful, expressive worship
Christmas celebrations often include:
- Lively music and praise.
- Testimonies.
- Drama or nativity presentations with a spiritual focus. Worship is usually more emotionally expressive, reflecting gratitude for Christ’s birth and coming.
5. Freedom of conscience about customs
It’s a time to teach that:
- Traditions like trees, gifts, or Santa are matters of personal conscience, not doctrine. You’re not a sinner for celebrating traditions but we shouldn’t forget what it’s about.
- Believers should guard against materialism or distraction from Christ. The emphasis is on heart posture, not external observance (Romans 14).
Christmas is a joyful celebration of Jesus Christ entering the world through the power of the Holy Spirit, to bring salvation, healing, and reconciliation; celebrated freely, biblically, and with a focus on living faith rather than ritual.
As the year is drawing to a close, I pray for every one of us. May we all live to see the end of the year. I pray that certain desires we hold will still come to pass before the year ends. I pray that next year will be another year of miracles and testimonies for each and every one of us.
May our statuses be changed, and may we celebrate love, life, and birth. I pray that the hand of the Lord will be upon us all the days of our lives.
To start the year off strong, there is now an Instagram page for Celestial Diary, where thoughts will be shared, the Word of God can be found, and weekly reminders for new blog posts will be posted. Give it a follow, and let’s connect!
