I’m back with another lesson from our Bible Study series! And this time we tried to understand the debate on creation; How was the world made? referring to the ‘Big bang theory’ versus ‘Let there be light’.
It is one of those questions unbelievers like to ask in an attempt to trick us and confuse us. We looked into both sides before making a conclusion; because wisdom is a treasure we all need to obtain (Proverbs 4:7).
How did our existence come to be?
Science:
In a nutshell, this is what I understand from the Big bang theory
- Everything in one tiny point: Imagine squeezing all the stars, planets, and space into a single, tiny dot, smaller than an atom. It’s super-hot and packed with energy.
- The universe starts expanding: Suddenly, the dot begins to stretch and grow like a balloon inflating. Space itself is stretching!
- Super-fast growth (inflation): In less than a second, the dot grows from smaller than an atom to huge, bigger than a galaxy. It’s still extremely hot.
- Energy turns into particles: The intense energy inside the universe cools slightly, forming tiny building blocks called particles. Some of these are matter, some are antimatter. Most antimatter disappears.
- Formation of protons and neutrons: These particles stick together to make protons and neutrons, like tiny Lego blocks waiting to build atoms.
- First atoms appear: After about 380,000 years, these Lego blocks combine into hydrogen and helium atoms; the simplest atoms in the universe.
- First light travels: The universe becomes transparent (due to it’s expansion). Because of this light can travel freely, shining across space for the first time.
- Gravity pulls matter together: Clouds of hydrogen and helium are pulled together by gravity. (I can only imagine giant invisible hands gathering gas to make the first stars).
- Stars and galaxies form: These gas clumps become bright, glowing stars, and groups of stars form galaxies, spinning like giant whirlpools in space.
- The universe fills with light and elements: Stars produce more light and create heavier elements inside them. Over billions of years, planets, solar systems, and everything we see today are formed.
Bible:
The Bible makes it clear that before anything existed, God already was there. But then the question is ‘Where was God then if He existed before everything?’
I believe the only way to attempt to clarify the confusion is by explaining the difference between where we are and where God is. There is a reason why He is omnipresent, omniscient and omnipotent. There is a reason why His time and our time is not the same, there is also a reason why our simple minds can’t comprehend spiritual things.
Spirit realm
- God was already there = Genesis 1:1 – “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.”
- God is bigger than our universe = 1 Kings 8:27 – “But will God really dwell on earth? The heavens, even the highest heaven, cannot contain you. How much less this temple I have built!
- It is a realm we believers can access = Luke 17:20 – 21 – Once, on being asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, Jesus replied, “The coming of the kingdom of God is not something that can be observed, nor will people say, ‘Here it is,’ or ‘There it is,’ because the kingdom of God is in your midst.
- Not only did God exist before it all, the angels were there too and creation happened long before we came to be = Job 38: 1 – 41
Physical realm → Genesis 1
- Day 1 – Light appears: God says, “Let there be light,” and suddenly light shines, separating day from night.
- Day 2 – Sky and water: God stretches the sky like a giant blue dome, separating water above (clouds, rain) from water below (oceans).
- Day 3 – Land, plants, and trees: God gathers the water into seas, making dry land appear, then plants, grass, and trees grow everywhere.
- Day 4 – Sun, moon, and stars: God places the sun to shine during the day, the moon to rule the night, and stars scattered across the sky.
- Day 5 – Fish and birds: God fills the seas with fish and sea creatures and the skies with birds of every kind.
- Day 6 – Land animals and humans: God creates lions, elephants, cows, and all land animals, then creates humans in His image, giving them life and purpose.
- Day 7 – God rests: After completing creation, God rests and enjoys His work, showing everything is perfect.
Science meets religion
- The Spirit Realm existed before anything → This is where God and His angels already were.
- (Science analogy: They see this as the “energy” or potential that existed before the universe; something was already there, not literally nothing.)
- (Science analogy: They see this as the “energy” or potential that existed before the universe; something was already there, not literally nothing.)
- Physical universe begins to form → The universe starts expanding, space is “dark and empty” (Genesis: darkness over the waters).
- Science: Big Bang, inflation, first expansion of space.
- Bible: “The earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep” (Genesis 1:2).
- Science: Big Bang, inflation, first expansion of space.
- God begins creation → “Let there be light.”
- Science: First light traveling freely through the universe (~380,000 years after the Big Bang).
- Bible: God speaks light into existence; the beginning of the ordered creation.
- Science: First light traveling freely through the universe (~380,000 years after the Big Bang).
If you ask me; our biblical explanation makes much more sense than whatever science is trying to convince us of. There are many questions and a lot is still uncertain when it comes to this big bang; things are being created out of nowhere but have the intelligence to form new things…..
I’d rather believe there was a God who created it all as He saw fit, than believe in some random explosion that created this complicated world we see before us. Once we also understand the different realms a lot of things start to make sense; life after death, the Holy Spirt, demons, angels etc.
These aren’t easy questions to answer and I’m sure even the explanation I just gave might be incomplete to some. I gave it an attempt because in order to share the gospel, I need to at least try and understand what I’m trying to share. I hope my explanation made sense to someone but if it didn’t, I urge you to do some research for yourself. Try and understand the fundamentals for yourself so that in time you’ll be able to explain it to another.
Stay Blessed x
