Why Consider Christianity? Finding Reason and Meaning in Faith (Pt 2)

In the previous part I mentioned how humans choose to believe for different reasons, and I also tried to point out (using human logic) that if one should consider a religion, Christianity would be the best choice because our God fits the description of a God and more.

However when people choose what they want to believe in, it’s usually for a personal reason. But the question is why does Christianity exist and why is it different from other religions?

What is the goal of Christianity?

Christianity is about building a meaningful relationship with God, the source of all life and goodness. Although He created us in His image and formed us so we could worship Him, the goal is to find true purpose in life and fulfillment in this temporary body by reconnecting with Him. We Christians believe that through Jesus Christ, we are saved, can experience forgiveness for our mistakes and live a life filled with love, purpose & hope. This isn’t just about following rules; it’s about transforming our life from the inside out and making a positive impact in the world. The ultimate promise is a lasting peace and joy, both in this life and beyond.

This is broadly explained with loads of grammar, but if I were to break it down, I’d say the reasons we serve God is:

To establish a personal and transformative relationship with Him through faith in Jesus Christ. This involves several key aspects:

  1. Salvation: Our primary goal is to receive salvation, which is the forgiveness of sins and reconciliation with God. We believe this is made possible through Jesus’s sacrificial death and resurrection (John 3:16).
  2. Living a Christ-like Life: We should also strive to follow Jesus’s teachings and example, embodying love, compassion, humility, and obedience to God’s will (Philippians 2:5).
  3. Glorifying God: The ultimate purpose of a Christian’s life is to glorify God in all things—through worship, service, and daily conduct (1 Corinthians 6:19-20).
  4. Spreading the Gospel: We are called to share the message of Jesus Christ (the Gospel) with others, encouraging them to also find salvation and live according to God’s will (Matthew 28:19-20).
  5. Eternal Life: The long-term goal is to attain eternal life with God in heaven, where believers will live in His presence forever (John 5:24).

It was challenging for me to pinpoint a single, definitive goal for Christianity. However, if I were to choose, I’d say the ultimate goal is to live in eternal bliss with God in heaven after this world passes away. Everything else—spreading the gospel, believing in Jesus, serving with our gifts—serves as a means to reach this ultimate destination.

So, if someone were to ask me what the goal of Christianity is and what I’m trying to achieve, I’d simply say: The goal is to live in paradise—a life free from sin and pain, filled with worship and joy. To achieve this, I must follow what the Lord requires of me.

Of course, the alternative to this is eternal separation from God, often described as burning in hell, but this statement only holds weight if the person already believes in the concepts of heaven and hell.

I did some research, and I found that everyone seems to have a slightly different take on the ‘goal’ of Christianity. I also studied the scriptures, but I couldn’t find a single answer that I could call the ‘real’ goal with 100% certainty.

While our motives and desires may vary, I genuinely pray that we all discover what our personal (Christian) goal is and what God individually expects from each of us.

Stay Blessed x
